It might sound odd for a place that cuts their hair, but the growth has actually been a good thing for a local barber shop, and now it’s nationally recognized. Salon Today named Vanessen’s Hair Design in its Top 200 Salons.
Like the hair they cut, the work of a hairdresser has many layers. It’s not difficult for Tiffany Donaldson to choose her favorite.
âMake people feel good,â Donaldson said.
Donaldson is one of roughly 30 employees at two Vanessen sites, and they are all celebrating their presence in the Salon Today 200 ranking. The publication honors the 200 shows for their overall business practices.
âIt’s not something that is just given. It’s something that they really watch and we are truly blessed and honored, âsaid Owner Gloria Kolbeck.
Of all the chosen salons, nationwide, Vanessen’s is the only South Dakota company on the list.
âWe wake up everyday and do what we love and there’s something so special about it,â owner Biz Word said.
Vanessen’s, located on West 26th Street, recently opened a second location on Western Avenue at the bridges. Salon Today recognizes the growth of Vanessen. As KELOLAND News told you, it also gives back to the community. In December, he organized a book club campaign and matching gifts. The owners just presented a check for $ 4,700 to Hayward Elementary School.
âIt was so great to be able to offer them that amount of money, and we actually allow hours to come in and have our staff read to the kids,â Word said.
The honor of the top 200 is a big achievement, but Kolbeck says that’s not why they are doing what they are doing. The hair might get shorter here, but Kolbeck says the drive to change lives won’t fade.
âBeing able to interact with our clients when they walk through the door by name and also knowing their stories is really a great opportunity as a business owner,â said Kolbeck.
Salon Today reviews salon qualifications and general business climate, and owners respond to an application process. Kolbeck says Vanessen has already made the Top 200 once, and that was ten years ago.
