From cozy slippers to essential humidors, here’s what Katie can’t live without during the cold winter months.
It’s the coldest time of the year, and most of us are really starting to feel it. From a record-breaking snowstorm in Virginia that left hundreds of cars stranded on the freeway for hours (and left many drivers strategizing how to prepare in case it happened to them!) to a rare cold spell causing snowfall in Florida 2022 must have heard about the mild weather in 2021 and took it as a personal challenge. Whatever your astrological sign, we have an idea that your horoscope for this month could read “stay inside and stay warm”.
Even though Katie is a big fan of the snow â she’s officially New York now, after all â she’s willing to hide indoors to escape the cold weather, like the rest of us. And if you know anything about Katie, you know she likes to be comfortable. So we asked her to share some of her favorite clothes and homewares to help us set the perfect mood for a happy and cozy evening at home.
The Danes actually have a specific word for that kind of safe, warm comfort that comes from snuggling up at home â it’s called hygge and is associated with feelings of contentment, comfort and well-being. With their cultural emphasis on this particular type of self-care, it’s no wonder Denmark is consistently ranked on the list of the happiest countries in the world. So let’s get inspired by the Danes and prepare to settle down until spring – with these recommendations, we see no reason for you to leave your house until then!
UGG Sheepskin Slippers
When your feet are cold, your whole body feels cool, which is why Katie chooses to wear these cozy slippers from UGG when she’s indoors. They’re easy to put on and take off anytime, but the rubber sole keeps you from slipping and sliding on hard floors as you walk around the house. The sheepskin lining keeps your feet snug all day, without breaking a sweat.
LL Bean Organic Terry Cloth Bathrobe
On those really cold days, we wish we never had to leave the hot shower. Those few seconds between opening the curtain and wrapping yourself in your towel are brutal. Save yourself a few freezing seconds by slipping on a terrycloth bathrobe straight out of the bath. Not only does it help you dry off, but it covers more than your regular towel, keeping you warm and dry with minimal effort.
Dry winter air wreaks havoc on your skin and sinuses. Not only can this contribute to dry, scaly skin, but it can actually cause nosebleeds or other sinus discomfort. Adding a humidifier is a great way to restore humidity levels to the air in your home. Most humidifiers are bulky and ugly, and need to be cleaned often to make sure they don’t blow mold into the air around you. This one from Canopy has a dishwasher-safe reservoir, making it easy to clean regularly. He’s also quiet, a quality Katie enjoys keeping around him.
Bearaby Weighted Blanket
Katie is officially converted to a weighted blanket! A weighted blanket feels like you’re wrapping yourself in a hug, but the glass beads they’re often made from make a pretty annoying noise when you move. This weighted blanket from Bearaby is made from breathable Tencel fabric that wicks away moisture if you tend to get hot under the covers. The weight mimics deep pressure stimulation, working to relax your nervous system and making it easier for you to rest.
Shit I Knit Motley Beanie
Did you know that you lose most of your body heat through the top of your head? All the more reason to put on a nice beanie in freezing weather. Not only will you disguise any bad hair days, but the soft knit of this beanie will help lock in some extra warmth, keeping you and your noggin snug. Speaking of costumes, don’t be surprised if someone mistakes you for Katie with this hat, since she wears hers all the time.
Branchial Brothers Green Lavender Candle
Breathe in the relaxing aromas of lavender, lemongrass and bergamot after lighting this candle. Fragrances will help you unwind after a long day or set the mood for a relaxing day at home. Made with soy wax, the candle burns longer than other wax blends and it will also burn soot-free. When you are done with the candle, you can clean the beautiful amber jar and use it for storage as well. Katie loves a lavender scent for its relaxing effect.
Cairo Beauty Face Ritual Rose Quartz Roller and Theorem Serum Boost Set
Katie loves a day at the spa, but in cold weather it’s easier to do crafts! And treating yourself to a relaxing facial is easier than you think. This set of serum and rollers allows you to hydrate your skin and depuff at the same time, while giving you a mini facial massage. The roller is made of rose quartz, which does not absorb any product and cools to the touch, allowing you to get the most out of the serums and creams you apply. When you’re done, simply wash the roller with soap and water so it’s ready to use next time.
LAKE Pima Long-Long Weekend Set in Winter
Matching pajamas always feel classier for some reason, almost like a special outfit for a night out. Katie is a big fan of PJ sets, especially LAKE. She’s a fan of these pima cotton designs because they’re soft to the touch and stretchy, making them a great choice for chilly nights or cozy days on the couch. Katie loves the simple stripes on this pair; the pattern brightens up the whole thing without feeling too busy.
Ginger Peach Cobbler Tea Drops
Wrap your hands around a hot cup of tea and savor the flavors of peach cobbler with these tea drops. Unlike sachets, you drop a heart-shaped tablet into hot water to brew this tea, allowing it to fully dissolve before you enjoy it. Although it’s as sweet as your favorite dessert, this caffeine-free tea is only 25 calories, making it a great after-dinner drink that will also satisfy your sweet tooth. Katie relied heavily on Tea Drops on her book tour to help her relax after a performance.
Pottery Barn Fireplace Tools
Snuggling up by a fireplace with a good book is Katie’s definition of a good time. You can’t keep the fire going without the proper tools, so why not make sure they look as good as they work? These brass fireplace tools are adorned with wooden handles and leather hangers, adding an extra touch of class to the normally plain tool set. Plus, they make refueling the fire and clearing the ashes a little more luxurious.
Yeti Rambler Mug with MagSlider Lid
We’ve all forgotten a cup of freshly brewed tea or coffee immediately after making it, and we’re all too familiar with the walk to the microwave to reheat the now cold drink. With a thermal mug like this one from Yeti, your drink will stay hot for hours. That’s why John and Katie can’t live without theirs! It comes with a top that you can close to prevent spills and retain heat, making it ideal for keeping at your desk while you work or taking it on a winter walk.
Bomba Lightweight Crew Socks
Keep your toes toasty warm in a pair of soft socks. Bombas makes crew socks that are cute and comfy, and they also donate one item to someone homeless for every item you buy from the brand, which is one of the reasons Katie and John are fans of the brand. So far, they have donated over 50 million pieces of clothing to those in need.
