Funky styles were the order of the day as hairstylists competed for top honors at the 2009 Regional Fashion Hair Design Awards.

The event, hosted by the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers, was held at Caroline Bay Hall yesterday, attracting around 60 hairdressers and as many models.

Ten salons were represented in the competition with six from Timaru, and one from Temuka, Ashburton, Oamaru and Dunedin.

Secretary Steph Fraser said entry numbers were down slightly this year because it was not a top award year but the competition was still tough.

Timaru’s Seth Dale won the title of senior general classification champion.

The 22-year-old has been a hairdresser for seven years and works at Rodney Wayne.

It was his third participation in the senior category, but his first overall victory, so he was completely satisfied. He said the inspiration for his “daytime style” entry was a “pin-up girl with a modern twist”. He only had 40 minutes to work his magic on model Samara Murcott.

The award for best apprentice was won by Ellen Johnstone of DNA Hairdressing in Ashburton. It was his third time competing for the 20-year-old.

The regional competition takes place every year, but it is only every two years that the winners participate in the national supreme prizes.
