Karen’s Hair Design by Karent Toti was named Portsmouth Business of the Year by the Portsmouth Business Association.
The announcement was made at the Portsmouth Business Association’s annual meeting at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth on June 10.
Toti is a longtime member of the Portsmouth business community and past president of the Portsmouth Business Association.
Toti has received commemorative articles from the Portsmouth Business Association, Portsmouth Rotary Club, City of Portsmouth as well as citations from the Rhode Island Senate and House.
PBA President John C. Farley said of Karen’s Hair Design: âKaren is a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit required to start and run a successful small business.
Karen, originally from Aquidneck Island, started working at the company over 30 years ago from a chair in the old JC Penny store in Newport. His company, Karen’s Hair Design, is now located at 3357 East Main Road. Karen’s Hair Design has a long history of supporting a variety of community organizations. Among the many organizations she has supported are: Relay for Life, Portsmouth Police, Pawswatch Animal Rescue, Portsmouth Rotary and Lucy’s Hearth. Additionally, Karen donated her personal time judging senior projects at Portsmouth High School, mentoring aspiring hairdressing students and serving as PBA President from 2011 to 2013. While Karen did all of this for the community , its salon activity continued. to grow. She is known to run a very clean, friendly and efficient shop that welcomes its customers with high business standards.

John C. Farley (Newport Wealth Management) resigned following the end of his two-year term as chairman. Farley left a significant impact on the organization by developing and coordinating the PBA’s first 5K community run / walk. The race raises money for the PBA Scholarship Fund. During his tenure as President, the PBA increased its scholarship to $ 1,000 and is currently awarding two of these scholarships to outstanding seniors who graduated from Portsmouth High School. The nomination process has also been changed to allow students to nominate themselves. Reflecting on his tenure as President, Farley commented: âThe past two years have been very rewarding in terms of the work we have been able to do and how it has deepened my connection to the community of Portsmouth. I’m proud of our city and can’t wait to see what more we can do together. “
