A hairdressing salon in Poole has been crowned hairdresser of the year by the Bournemouth Daily Echo.
Novalux Hairdressing opened its new salon in Alder Road less than a year ago amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Receiving hundreds of votes and hundreds of nominations for the award, NovaLux has proven to be head and shoulders above the rest of the field after securing 40 percent of the vote.
After working in her old salon for almost 25 years, owner Nova Fanner decided last year to go it alone and create her own salon.
Having been selected alongside longtime salons across the city, Nova said she was surprised to learn she had won the award.
“It’s amazing,” she said.
“I’m shocked because I only opened here last December.
“There were so many other fantastic shows that were nominated that have been around for ages so it was a big surprise when I found out I had won.”
The lounge was only open for 30 days before the BCP Council area was placed in Level 4 measures with the next third lockdown in January.
Following the announcement, NovaLux, like many other shows and businesses, was forced to close for four months.
After working for a security company performing lateral flow testing for municipal staff, the show reopened in April this year.
Over the past six months, Nova says its clientele has grown steadily, with the salon quickly establishing a glowing reputation for customer service, stylish interiors, and professional finishes and colors.
She added: “Since we reopened it’s really good. A lot of my clients have followed me here from the salon where I worked, and it gets busier and busier.
“Everyone says how fresh, beautiful and bright everything is.
“A lot of my new clients have heard from me through word of mouth and recommendations from friends and family, which is really cool. Sure, the reviews on Google and social media are helpful, but I think that personal recommendations from people you trust are always very important.
Novalux Hairdressing was also a finalist in the Best New Salon category at the 2022 UK Hair and Beaty Awards, whose national competition winner will be announced in March next year.
In the coming months, Nova is looking to expand its business by hiring more young aspiring hairdressers, with the possibility of opening a second salon in the region.
She said: “We just want to grow. It’s just me and a young girl doing her training right now. I would like to expand the living room and maybe create another one elsewhere.
“I wanted to make sure I could do it myself and I didn’t want to rely on someone else and this award proved all the hard work was worth it.
“I just want to say thank you to my clients. They are the ones who nominated and voted for me. Without them, I would not have won this award.
