Madison hair salon offers free haircuts for transgender and non-binary customers | News

A hair salon in Madison strives to ensure that all of its customers feel welcome and comfortable when they enter the salon.

For many people, getting their hair done is a relaxing and exciting experience.

But for non-binary or transgender people, like William Shepard, having their hair done can be something they dread.

“I got tired of going to salons and they just weren’t successful,” he said.

Shepard said he spent countless dollars at various salons during his transition.

Chelsey Sandlin, owner of “Area 52 Hair Lab” in Madison, said getting the “right haircut” shouldn’t be another thing they have to worry about.

“They spend thousands and thousands of dollars to look on the outside how they feel on the inside, so they can be accepted by everyone,” she said.

Thus, she offers “on the spot” haircuts for non-binary or transgender people.

“Chelsey is a godsend,” Shepard said.

He has been a Sandlin customer for just over a year. Shepard said having this kind of service in northern Alabama is amazing.

“If you had told me, God, eight years ago that there would be a salon that offered free haircuts to trans people trying to figure themselves out, I wouldn’t have believed you,” he said. he declares.

Shepard remembers when his old stylist gave him a haircut that helped him see himself clearly.

“I looked in the mirror, and for what felt like the first time, I saw myself,” he recalls. “I saw someone. I saw myself.

Sandlin said it brings tears to her eyes every time she witnesses this experience with her clients.

“They finally look in the mirror and see exactly what they see inside and know that everyone is going to see it for once,” she said.
