CHIPPEWA FALLS (WQOW) – The standout moment from the 2022 Oscars appears to be when Will Smith hit out at Chris Rock over a comment made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss.
Jada suffers from alopecia, which is much more common than some people think.
Jenna Benson, hairstylist at Elements Salon Studios in Chippewa Falls, said she’s seen many clients with the condition, defined by the Mayo Clinic as temporary or permanent hair loss.
It may be a gradual thinning of the top of your head, or your hair may suddenly loosen and start falling out easily in clumps, which is usually a sign that it will grow back.
Alopecia can be hereditary or result from hormonal changes, medications or even just stress and aging.
Whatever the cause, Benson said not to give up hope.
“I always like people to feel beautiful inside and out, but I know some people really struggle with their baldness-related insecurities,” Benson said. “Basically, it sort of starts with maintaining a healthy diet and maintaining those stress levels as well.”
She said some people might see regrowth if they could reduce their stress levels. Otherwise, she suggested taking vitamins B-6 and C, finding products that mention thickening or volume, asking your doctor about scalp treatments, or looking into wigs or hairpieces.
Benson said what works for some may not work for others. But she said no one should feel uncomfortable going to their hairdresser for help.
