Illusions Hair Design has been a place of camaraderie for 37 years.
Kenneth Patton, owner and master barber of Illusions Hair Design, has announced the permanent closure of the salon.
The company is located at 3157 Broadway in Lorain.
Patton was the owner of the building, but due to the sale of the property and other factors, he closes the doors.
“With the pandemic (of the novel coronavirus) and the other hurdles we face now, it’s just time to stop it,” he said.
Patton graduated from Admiral King High School in 1974.
In 1979 he graduated from the Ohio College of Barber Styling.
Patton is married to Susan Patton and has six children.
Although Patton has been a barber since 1980, he only opened the shop in 1984.
âI’ve been a barber for 41 years,â he says.
Patton said he liked people to look their best.
âI like people to be beautiful,â he says. âThe reason I called it Illusions is because so many people come in with illusions and unrealistic expectations.
âIt’s an optical thing; people want to look a certain way and I help them reach their own potential.
Patton said his love for the haircut started when he was young in the basement of his family home.
âI started barbering when I was 13 in the basement,â he said. âI would cut my hair and my family’s hair.
Patton opened the shop after working in manufacturing, but aspired to be a full-time entrepreneur.
âI wanted to open the store because I didn’t really like my other jobs,â he said. “I realized I wanted to be more active and have a cleaner type of job.”
Interacting with people is what he will miss most in Patton.
âI will miss the camaraderie and just talking to people,â he said.
Patton said he will fondly remember the years as a barber and owner, but looks forward to the next chapter in his life.
âI’m not quite ready to sit down,â he said.
Patton said he wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up cutting his hair elsewhere.
âIt’s a labor of love,â he said. âIt’s a little hard to stop. “
The last business day for Illusions Hair Design is August 30th.
Patton said he would always cut hair for his clients who live in Lorain County nursing homes.
There will be a celebration at 1 p.m. on August 31 in honor of the legacy of Illusions.
Illusions furniture and materials are on sale now on Facebook Marketplace.
