ALTON — Talent, tenacity, determination and faith built the new VSalon By Valérie.

Owner and Founder Valerie Baumann’s vision for VSalon By Valerie, a full-service hair salon and blow-dry salon, has not only created a new business in Alton, but also brought the restoration of one of the historic buildings. from town to 102 W. 7th St., the former home of the Duncan Foundry and Machine Co., a multi-storey machine factory.

“It’s a beautiful atmosphere and modern experience in a historic setting, designed as industrial and rustic,” said Baumann, of Alton, who has worked in the salon industry for more than 20 years.

“God is foremost, and every part of it is a blessing from the Lord,” Baumann said. “I always dreamed of opening my own salon. I wanted to create a beautiful place for people to come and have this incredible experience, but also a family atmosphere for stylists, where they can retreat to a space that fuels their creativity on a daily basis.

Baumann developed the VSalon concept which is different from most salons. VSalon By Valerie is based on a team building and apprenticeship program that trains master hairdressers.

“So no matter which stylists you go to, you’ll get great service because we train entirely from scratch,” she said.

Between Baumann and managers Ashley Fisher and Heather Pearson, all master stylists, new stylists are personally trained and learn everything the trio knows, with the goal of each person becoming a level 10 master stylist.

“We are continually educating ourselves,” Baumann said. “By the middle of the year, we will have a classroom on the second floor and we will finally experience a classroom atmosphere during our training.

“In addition, once the master stylist level is reached, we share everything, the formulas, the new ideas, and that makes us a mine of talent.

“We help each other and that kind of atmosphere is not only fun to work in, but makes us all better. This fuels our passion for the industry. It’s exciting.”

New designers follow Baumann as part of their training.

The salon is currently looking for two full-time stylists, who will learn the VSalon By Valérie method.

“They would either work on commission or by the hour,” Baumann said. “This is a great position for someone fresh out of school through VSalon’s continuing education. It’s not like other apprenticeship programs because they’ll be behind the chair from the start. .

“A master stylist checks their work and helps lower-level stylists who, with other apprenticeship programs, don’t sit behind a chair for six months to a year. In my living room, I put them right behind the chair. I do this to build trust.

She and the managers also help new stylists build a clientele, which can be difficult for experienced stylists as well. Service prices vary depending on a stylist’s experience.

“If you have no customers or just a few, we can build a customer base in a year or less,” Baumann said. “Or, if you’re someone struggling, VSalon will create a customer base for you and we’ll build it at rapid speed.”

All of the current VSalon By Valérie stylists have a full clientele, built up in less than a year under Baumann’s guidance and expertise. Baumann operated VSalon By Valerie as a concept salon at Third Street Salon during the construction of VSalon By Valerie’s home in Baumann’s new location. VSalon soft-opened about two months ago, during ongoing construction.

VSalon By Valerie’s stylists give a scalp massage with every hair wash and use certified organic hair color by All Nutrient, vegan hair care by Eufora and a range of cannabis hair care products by Leaf and Flower. The salon also has a blow-dry salon and makeup application using Jane Iredale cosmetics.

Full amenities include Germania Brewhaus coffee, hot tea, weekly fresh baked goods, and snacks.

Baumann’s next goal and part of his long term dream is to have a small private cosmetology school for about 20 students.

“The school will not only teach an understanding of geometric hair styling and the art of coloring, but will also make stylists feel confident when they graduate and they can work for VSalon By Valerie as soon as they graduate. . I’d like to do it in 10 years or less.”

VSalon By Valerie’s current hours of operation are 12:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 8:00-4:00 p.m. Saturday. Dial 618-433-1177 for an appointment.
