‘A welcoming environment’: Black-owned hair salon ‘Beauty and Designz’ opens at Headington Hall |

A new black-owned hair salon has opened in Headington Hall.

Co-owners Natasha Coleman and Tracy Holman make up two of the three people in charge of Beauty and Designz Studio Lounge, along with stylist Ebony McCloud.

“Expect a welcoming environment,” Coleman said. “We will greet you with friendly faces.”

Coleman said she wants the studio to be a place where clients can come “to unwind from the outside world.” She said the decision to call the living room a “studio living room” was tied to their goals for the living room’s relaxing environment.

“We want not just the students, but also the outside community to be able to come in…and relax a bit,” Coleman said. “We want our customers to be able to talk to us about everything, not just as cosmetologists and barbers.”

Beauty and Designz make sure every customer is “happy and satisfied”. Coleman said she wants every customer, “white, blue, yellow, pink, purple, white (or) black,” to have “the best service possible.” to supply.”

Coleman said there was a lack of salons like his in the community. “Especially at Norman and Moore, we don’t have a lot of salons open that tend to cater to ethnic hair,” Coleman said. “They can’t really find anyone to take care of their curls.”

The decision to open at Headington Hall was made when a Coleman client and former OU alum contacted her. “She said OU wanted to support black-owned businesses,” Coleman said. Coleman then pitched the idea to his business partner, who agreed to the effort. “It was a struggle. Blood, sweat and tears were shed in this endeavor,” Coleman said.

Beauty and Designz had a soft opening in December and will have its grand opening in February.

“I call it ‘Paint and Virgin Sip,'” Coleman said. “We will have our logo on canvases that people can paint. The best will receive a T-shirt and we will hang it on the wall.

“Paint & Virgin Sip” will begin at 2:00 p.m. on February 5 and is open to the public.

Coleman invites students who might be interested in becoming a stylist to “just come and see.” She said the studio was looking for more barbers and stylists.

“I’m a licensed instructor, so if any students want to apprentice…or if they already have their license, come check it out,” Coleman said.

Beauty and Designz Studio is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Customers can find the reservation online, as well as the price list of the studio.
